Two resorts can have the same star rating, sit on equally beautiful beaches and offer nearly identical lists of inclusions, yet deliver completely different vacations.
A five-star rating does not tell you how a resort feels
When clients ask for a five-star all-inclusive, I understand what they mean: they want quality. But a star rating cannot tell you whether a resort feels lively or serene, intimate or sprawling, polished or playful. It also cannot tell you whether you will love being there for a week.
That is why I think of resort planning as matchmaking. The goal is not to find the resort with the most impressive marketing. It is to find the one whose personality fits yours.
Start with the atmosphere you actually want
Imagine a perfect afternoon on vacation. Are you at a quiet pool with a book? At a swim-up bar with music? On a wide beach while the kids bounce between the water and the pool? Are you looking for romance, social energy, privacy or a little of everything?
Those preferences matter. A resort that gets rave reviews from honeymooners may frustrate a family with young children. A resort families adore may feel far too active for a couple who wants a quiet anniversary trip. Reviews are useful only when you understand whether the reviewer wanted the same vacation you do.
Look closely at the beach, not just the photos
For many travelers, the beach is one of the biggest reasons to choose an all-inclusive resort. Yet beaches vary enormously. Some are calm and swimmable. Others are dramatic and beautiful but have rough water. Some are long enough for morning walks, while others are small coves. Seaweed can also be seasonal in some destinations.
If the beach is central to your trip, say so. I would rather prioritize the right stretch of coastline than put you at a resort with a prettier lobby and a beach you do not enjoy.
Dining is about more than the number of restaurants
A resort may advertise ten restaurants, but that number alone tells us very little. What matters is how dining works. Are reservations required? Is there a dress code? Are some venues open only certain nights? Are there enough options for dietary needs or selective eaters? How easy is it for a family to eat together without turning dinner into a project?
For food-focused travelers, we may prioritize a smaller resort with consistently strong dining over a larger property with more venues. For families, flexibility may matter more than formality.
Room configuration deserves real attention
This is especially important for families and multigenerational travelers. A room described as accommodating four people does not necessarily mean four people will be comfortable in it. We look at actual bedding, privacy, bathroom layout, connecting-room options and where everyone will put their things.
For couples, the priorities may be completely different: location, plunge pool, ocean view, club-level benefits or simply a room that feels special enough for the occasion.
Location changes the vacation
Some travelers want to arrive at the resort and stay there. Others want restaurants, culture, excursions or a town nearby. Transfer time from the airport can matter too, particularly with young children or a short trip.
There is no reason to pay for an incredible resort in a destination you will not enjoy, or to choose the perfect destination and then stay at a property that fights against the way you want to spend your days. The whole trip has to work together.
The right resort should feel obvious once you are there
Good all-inclusive planning is not about chasing the highest rating. It is about understanding the tradeoffs before you travel. Every resort has them. The job is to make sure the things it does exceptionally well are the things you care about most.
