As a travel advisor, I’m always on the lookout for the perfect travel experiences to recommend to my clients. Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Insight Vacations on their “Highlights of Spain” tour. This nine-day journey allowed me to explore the very best of Spain, from the architectural wonders of Barcelona to the artistic treasures of Madrid. The combination of fascinating history, scenic landscapes, and unforgettable cultural experiences made this trip one for the books. Here’s a closer look at the itinerary and why this tour is a perfect way to discover Spain.
Day 1: Arrival in Barcelona
Our adventure began in Barcelona, a city that perfectly blends modernity with history. Upon arrival, we were transferred to our luxurious hotel, where we had some time to relax after our journey. That evening, we gathered for a Welcome Dinner at a local restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious array of tapas and local specialties while getting to know our fellow travelers. The energy of Barcelona, with its mix of old-world charm and modern flair, set the tone for the rest of the trip.
Day 2: Barcelona – The City of Gaudí
Day two was dedicated to exploring the iconic sights of Barcelona, particularly the works of famed architect Antoni Gaudí. But first we took and early morning drive to Montserrat, located just outside of Barcelona, offers a breathtaking experience with its dramatic, jagged peaks and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The mountain is home to the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat, a site of religious significance and a place of pilgrimage. You can hike or take a cable car up to the summit, where the stunning landscapes and unique rock formations provide a serene escape from the city. Montserrat also boasts a rich history, with its iconic Black Madonna statue and impressive art collections, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and culture seekers alike.
On our return to Barcelona we started with a guided visit to Sagrada Familia, Gaudí’s masterpiece. The intricate facades, towering spires, and the stunning interior made this one of the most awe-inspiring places I’ve ever visited. It’s easy to understand why this basilica is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The day ended with a relaxing dinner and a stroll along the lively Las Ramblas.
Day 3: Along the Coast to Valencia
On day three, we journeyed along Spain’s Mediterranean coast to the city of Valencia, known for its futuristic architecture and beautiful beaches. Along the way, we stopped for scenic views and photos, admiring the sparkling coastline.
In Valencia, we explored the City of Arts and Sciences, a stunning complex designed by Santiago Calatrava. The futuristic structures, including the Oceanographic (Europe’s largest aquarium) and the Palace of Arts, were truly awe-inspiring. We also visited the historic La Lonja de la Seda, a UNESCO-listed silk exchange, which highlighted Valencia’s rich history as a trading hub. That evening, we enjoyed a delightful dinner featuring paella, a dish Valencia is famous for, and the local specialty horchata.
Day 4: Exquisite Granada and the Alhambra
Day four took us south to Granada, a city that exudes charm and history, dominated by the magnificent Alhambra Palace. After settling into our hotel, we embarked on a guided tour of this Moorish fortress, with its stunning gardens, intricate tilework, and breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Alcazaba, the oldest part of the Alhambra, and the Generalife Gardens were particularly mesmerizing. The blend of history, art, and nature here is simply unparalleled.
In the evening, we enjoyed a traditional Andalusian dinner and had the opportunity to relax and reflect on the day’s beauty.
Day 5: A Scenic Drive to Seville
On day five, we embarked on a scenic drive through the rolling hills of Andalusia toward Seville, one of Spain’s most vibrant cities. The drive itself was a treat, with views of olive groves and rustic villages dotting the landscape.
Upon arrival in Seville, we had time to settle into our hotel before enjoying a leisurely evening exploring the city’s lively streets and squares. Seville is known for its energetic atmosphere, and it was easy to see why people fall in love with it.
Day 6: Seville – The City of Carmen
Day six was dedicated to exploring Seville, the birthplace of flamenco and home to some of Spain’s most iconic landmarks. We began our day with a visit to the Real Alcázar, a magnificent palace complex with exquisite Moorish architecture and lush gardens. We also visited the impressive Seville Cathedral, the largest Gothic cathedral in the world, where we had the chance to climb the Giralda Tower for panoramic views of the city.
In the evening, we enjoyed a flamenco performance, where passionate dancers, singers, and musicians brought the art of flamenco to life. Seville is truly the heart and soul of this traditional Spanish dance, and the performance was one of the highlights of the entire trip.
Day 7: Moorish Cordoba and Onward to Madrid
On day seven, we traveled to Cordoba, a city that showcases the rich blend of Moorish and Christian heritage. We began with a visit to the Mezquita, a mosque-turned-cathedral with striking red-and-white striped arches. It’s one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks, and the fusion of Islamic and Christian architecture is a testament to the city’s diverse history.
After exploring Cordoba, we made our way to Madrid, Spain’s bustling capital, where we arrived in the evening and had time to relax before a delightful dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 8: Madrid – The Bourbons’ City
Day eight was dedicated to exploring Madrid, a city steeped in royal history. We began with a visit to the Royal Palace, the largest functioning royal palace in Europe. The grandeur of the palace’s architecture, its ornate rooms, and the famous Throne Room were truly impressive.
We also visited the Prado Museum, home to one of the finest collections of European art, featuring works by Goya, Velázquez, and El Greco. The day ended with some free time to explore Madrid’s vibrant neighborhoods, including the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor, or indulge in some shopping.
Day 9: Depart Madrid
On our final day, we had a leisurely breakfast before transferring to the airport for our flight home. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to Spain, but the memories of the incredible cities, rich culture, and vibrant experiences stayed with me long after the trip ended.
