There are certain trips in life that become etched in your memory, filling it with incredible experiences and unforgettable moments. My recent adventure to Maui was certainly one such trip. As the plane touched down at Kahului Airport, I could already sense a transformation beginning—one that was about to unfold with each breathtaking location and every new friend made along the way.
From the very start, everything was meticulously organized by ASTA and the Kā‘anapali Beach Resort Association. Upon arrival, the staggered transportation to Kā‘anapali Beach Resort meant no waits and a seamless transition into what promised to be a glorious few days. As our car wound its way along the picturesque routes, the soothing sound of the waves crashing against the shore began to echo louder, singing a welcoming song.
First Impressions at The Westin Maui
Our first stop, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, was nothing short of spectacular. Although I arrived a tad bit early for check-in, the resort was incredibly accommodating. I left my luggage at the front desk and headed next door to Whalers Village, a shopping haven that offered an array of boutiques, eateries, and local delights. As my feet strolled the neatly brushed walkways, my senses were tantalized by the aroma of fresh Hawaiian cuisine and the sight of unique handicrafts.
By the time 3 PM rolled around, I was more than ready to check into my room. Stepping inside, the luxurious ambiance struck me instantly. From the stunning views of the Pacific Ocean right from my balcony to the lush volcanic mountains in the backdrop, the setting was perfect for rejuvenation and adventure.
That evening, the welcome reception at Hale ‘A set the stage for the rest of the journey. Gathered under the gently setting sun, I met fellow traveler advisors, each brimming with the same excitement I felt. Shelley and Liz, our wonderful hosts, were the epitome of Hawaiian hospitality, ensuring everyone felt part of the family right from the start.
Exploring Hokupa’a and Whalers Village
The next morning began with a leisurely breakfast on my own at The Lanai. It was lovely to sit outdoors, feel the morning breeze, and savor some delicious island-inspired dishes. Afterward, we were treated to a site tour of the Westin. Libby Child, from Wesitin was our guide, and she brilliantly showcased the abundant amenities the resort had to offer. The Hokupa’a experience, in particular, stood out with its exclusive access to the Lanai. It promised cultural immersion and well-being improvement, which fit perfectly with the resort’s serene vibes.
Lunch at Monkeypod Kitchen in Whalers Village was another highlight. The bustling atmosphere, combined with savory dishes and the companionship of Shelley, Liz, and other group members, made it a delightful affair. That evening, we dined at Ulu Kitchen by Merriman back at the Westin. Each bite encapsulated the fresh and vibrant flavors of Maui, setting a high culinary standard for the trip.
Transition to Hyatt Regency Maui
Waking up to the sounds of the ocean was surreal, and it got even better with a morning beachwalk to Kā’anapli Alii, led by KBRA representatives. This was followed by a unique HI`UWAI session with Fred Torres, where we embraced the cultural traditions of entering the ocean. It was an enriching experience that connected us even more to the island’s spirit.
After a leisurely breakfast, we checked out of the Westin and transitioned to our new home for the next two nights, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. This sprawling 40-acre resort was a sight to behold, featuring lush gardens, shimmering pools, and cascading waterfalls. The highlight for me was the astronomy program, which promised stargazing like never before.
Dinner that night at Japengo was an exquisite culinary journey, and the “Tour of the Stars” afterward was the icing on the cake. Standing under the vast Hawaiian night sky, guided by expert astronomers, was a magical experience that I’ll cherish forever.
Wildlife Tours and The Drums of the Pacific
The next day was packed with insightful activities. After a delicious breakfast, we embarked on a comprehensive site tour of the Hyatt Regency. Teresa Higa and Ary Shapiro were fantastic hosts, walking us through the vast array of amenities and activities. A private wildlife tour was the highlight of the morning, where we got to observe the resort’s unique inhabitants, including adorable penguins.
Lunch at Umalu was a relaxed affair, allowing us to enjoy the facilities at the resort afterward. As the afternoon sun began to set, we were transported to Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club for the Treecovery Talk. Here, we learned about the important conservation efforts led by Bill Countryman and Duane Sparkman, and it was inspiring to see the dedication to preserving Maui’s natural beauty.
That evening, the “Drums of the Pacific” Luau at the Hyatt Regency was an absolute spectacle. From the traditional imu ceremony to the vibrant Polynesian performances, it was an immersive journey through the islands’ cultures, complete with delicious native Hawaiian cuisine.
Sheraton Maui and Wild Dolphin Cruise
Our next transition was to the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa. Located at the iconic Black Rock, the resort offered panoramic views and luxurious comfort. The cliff dive ceremony was a standout moment, a tradition carried out with great honor and pride.
The following day, I indulged in the relaxing facilities at the Sheraton but the true highlight was the wildlife and wild dolphin cruise with Teralani Sailing Adventures. The gentle breeze, the sight of dolphins playing in the turquoise waters, and the laughter shared with new friends made for a perfect afternoon.
Our dinners, from the vibrant atmosphere of Hula Grill to the scenic backdrop at the Sheraton’s Sandbar, were always a time to relive delightful moments and share stories.
Saying Goodbye: A Bittersweet Farewell
On the final day, after a hearty breakfast at Coral Reef, it was time to check out and bid farewell to this slice of paradise. Reflecting back, each moment, each smile, and each new friendship formed was a testament to the magic of Maui. The careful planning and warm hospitality made every day an adventure.
As the plane took off from Kahului Airport, soaring above the beautiful island, I knew this was not goodbye, but a heartfelt “see you soon.” My journey through Maui was enchanting, enriching, and a rejuvenation of the spirit. This island will forever hold a special place in my heart. Until we meet again, aloha Maui.
