As a travel advisor and a parent, I’ve always believed in the power of travel to open hearts, shift perspectives, and shape who we are. But nothing brings that belief to life more than traveling with your child. I recently returned from South Africa with my 12-year-old son, and it was one of the most enriching, eye-opening experiences we’ve ever shared.
It was a true adventure filled with wonder, connection, and discovery. We spent two days on safari in Kruger National Park, explored the vibrant city of Cape Town, visited the Two Oceans Aquarium, and even enjoyed a surprisingly kid-friendly wine tour in Stellenbosch. One of our most memorable meals took place at GOLD Restaurant, where dinner became a celebration of African culture and community. Every moment offered something new for my son to experience, and through his eyes, I got to rediscover the world all over again.

The Magic of Kruger National Park
There’s nothing quite like the moment your child sees a lion in the wild for the first time. It’s pure magic. Kruger National Park gave us everything we could have hoped for. We watched elephants wander across the road just feet from our vehicle, spotted giraffes silhouetted against the landscape, and listened to the sounds of the bush as sun rose.
It wasn’t just about the animals. My son asked questions about conservation, listened intently to our guide’s stories, and started to understand the fragile beauty of this ecosystem. It was a lesson he’ll carry with him far beyond this trip.
Cape Town’s Coastal Wonders
Cape Town is a city that stuns you with its beauty and welcomes you with its soul. We took in the panoramic views from Table Mountain, walked through the vibrant neighborhood of Camps Bays, and spent a few hours marveling at marine life in the Two Oceans Aquarium. That aquarium visit sparked so many questions and “did you know?” moments. It was one of those rare travel experiences that’s both fun and deeply educational.
We also spent time at the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever visited. Nestled against the slopes of Table Mountain, the gardens were peaceful and full of surprises. My son loved running along the canopy walkway and spotting birds and insects hidden among the flowers and trees. It was a reminder that nature can be both calming and endlessly fascinating, especially when you slow down and take it all in together.

A Family-Friendly Wine Day in Stellenbosch
Wine country might not sound like a kid-friendly destination, but Stellenbosch surprised us. Some vineyards have created welcoming experiences for families, complete with grape juice tastings, outdoor games, and plenty of space to explore. While I sipped a beautifully aged Chenin Blanc, my son played lawn games and joined a scavenger hunt designed just for kids. It was relaxed, beautiful, and enjoyable for both of us.
An Evening to Remember at GOLD Restaurant
On our final night in Cape Town, we had dinner at GOLD Restaurant, and it was unforgettable. This wasn’t just a meal. It was a full-on experience with storytelling, music, dancing, and flavors from all across Africa. Watching my son try new foods, learn how to drum, and fully immerse himself in the moment was the perfect way to end our trip.
